2020 Q1: Humanist Invocations!

by | Mar 9, 2020 | 0 comments

About the Presentation:

Since the 2014 Supreme Court decision affirming that sectarian, religious invocations at local legislative meetings are permitted, the Central Florida Freethought Community (CFFC) has facilitated 86 Humanist invocations, including one in the Florida House of Representatives. CFFC Co-founders Jocelyn and David Williamson will discuss the project and the resistance to it from inside and outside of the organization. They will also discuss their recent 11th Circuit victory as well as how these “prayers” legitimize Humanism in the community and how they have even converted some theists to the practice of offering secular invocations for mixed audiences. Participants will learn how to approach requesting, writing, and delivering invocations in their own community.

About the Presenters:

Jocelyn and David Williamson founded the Central Florida Freethought Community, an Orlando area AHA affiliate, in 2012. They serve together on the Board of Directors of the Florida Humanist Association (FHA), an AHA chapter; she as President and he as Secretary. They are co-coordinators of the FHA’s conference FREEFLO and work to ensure Florida groups stay connected via a biennial Florida secular leadership summit.
