While the board voted in 2003 to drop “of Friends”, the IRS still shows us registered as “Humanist Society of Friends”. Because this is not in line with our brand identity and may cause issues when working with external organizations, this should be corrected.

This item is hung up at the IRS.
June 4, 2024, I wrote a letter to the IRS regarding our legal organization name as recorded with them.
July 2, 2024 (received August 2), the IRS responded without answering this specific question.
Per email from Joaquin, it sounds like we are good, but I still do not understand why we do not come up in the public search.
As the AHA Auditors have never reported an issue with this, I will close the item but continue to seek out clarification on the search.

1. No, THS has never–to my knowledge–filed 990s with the IRS or an equivalent form with DC. This IRS resource seems to pretty clearly state that it isn’t required and THS is included with AHA’s consolidated audit–AHA’s auditors also completed it and its affiliated entities’ information returns and hasn’t brought up the need to file a 990 for THS.
2. The only recommendation I have is to get clarification and advice from AHA’s auditors/attorneys and to let them sort out whatever problems may exist. I don’t have any knowledge that the name was changed with the IRS but it seems the IRS letter was made out to THS and not HSOF. There could be a lag between the updating of the internal records and the online records.
