Curious about becoming a Humanist Celebrant? You've come to the right place!

The Humanist Society has been endorsing Humanist Professionals since 1939 and today, our Humanist Celebrants are meeting the ceremonial needs of people at a wide array of life’s milestones.

What does a Humanist Celebrant do?

Humanist Celebrants preside over ceremonies celebrating or commemorating important moments in human lives.

Weddings

Weddings are one of the most common ceremonies conducted by Humanist Celebrants. Humanist Celebrants create unique, meaningful, values-based ceremonies for non-religious and inter-religious couples.

Memorials

Humanist Celebrants are well-suited to perform memorial or celebration of life ceremonies using humanist values to meet families in their moment of grief and create a ceremony that honors the life of their loved one while holding space for all in attendence to process their grief in meaningful and individual ways.

Child Welcomings

Whether birth or adoption, child welcoming ceremonies can be a wonderful way to bring family and friends together in celebration of this major life milestone.

Gender Transitions

The process of gender transition offers many moments to celebrate. Transition is often difficult in many ways, and pausing to celebrate starting hormone replacement therapy (HRT), sharing a new name with loved ones, or completing a desired surgery are just a few of the many possible moments a trans individual may wish to mark.

Sobriety

Meeting sobriety goals is another unique opportunity to gather with friends and loved ones to celebrate a variety of milestones on this journey. We know that having a strong support system is a key component in successful addiction recovery, and pausing to honor these achievements can help reinforce this support.

...and more!

Humanist Celebrants are not bound by traditional religion and its dogma, so they are able to provide custom-made ceremonies imbued with personal meaning and honor the shared humanity and values of those involved. There are many moments on life's journey which deserve recognition. Start new traditions!
The sky is the limit!

How is The Humanist Society different from other endorsing bodies?

The Humanist Society is recognized as a 501(c)(3) religious organization for the purposes of endorsing the “clergy” of humanism, including Celebrants. Our endorsements are recognized in all 50 US States to solemnize marriages.

Many online endorsers offer free endorsements. Some states are beginning to not recognize these endorsements as valid to perform weddings in their state. The Humanist Society’s endorsement process (detailed application, references, phone interview, etc.) and professional development sets you apart as a Humanist Professional.
