Beliefs, Mission, and Vision

The Humanist Society is guided by Humanism and Its Aspirations: Humanist Manifesto III, The Amsterdam Declaration and by many other Humanist writings that have shaped our understanding of what it means to live a meaningful life. Together, these ideas inspire us to build a more compassionate, just, and hopeful world without the need for the supernatural.

1. We believe in the resilience of the human spirit.

Throughout millions of years of human history, people have faced challenges with courage, creativity, and hope. We have learned to adapt, to care for one another, and to build communities where humans can feel belonging. Across cultures and religious traditions, we see shared values of kindness, compassion, and respect. Through stories, celebrations, and rituals, we find meaning, strengthen our relationships, and connect with the natural world.

2. We believe that nature fills us with wonder.

The universe invites us to ask questions, seek understanding, and never stop learning. Every new discovery reminds us that there is still so much to explore. As we learn more about the world and our place within it, we gain a deeper appreciation for both the beauty of nature and the responsibility we share to care for it. We are a part of the unfolding story of the universe, and our lives add meaning to that story.

3. We believe that empathy is the heart of an ethical life.

We strive to live by the Platinum Rule: Treat others the way they want to be treated.  Empathy inspires us to act justly, seek equality and equity, and defend human dignity inherent to us all. This calls us to listen with compassion, respect each person’s experiences, and seek understanding before judgment. By caring for one another while honoring our own values, we help create communities where freedom, responsibility, dignity, and joy can flourish for everyone.

Together we aspire to seek truth with humility, to love others with compassion, to live with integrity, and to leave the world better for those who come after us.
